There is no secret that the perch is one of the most popular freshwater fish in the fishing hobby. Probably all fishing enthusiasts know what a perch is, and just as many have been able to catch one. Perch gets its popularity from the big bang they create to the rod, and because of just how fierce they are. Additionally, perch can be found in most lakes across the world and it's one of the most rewarding fish you can catch. The perch can be fileted and cooked as a tasty dish. And if you are discouraged by the pike's big teeth but still want to catch big fish, a perch can weigh up to 7 kilograms! (although the biggest one caught by a rod and reel is around 4 kilos). To catch a perch of this size requires not only good gear but also technique.
So you want to catch a big perch, well one thing you need is knowledge about the lake you are fishing. In the hotter times perch are usually swimming all over the lake, but usually hang out with others in schools. The location for perch is usually around green spots with loads of vegetation and roots or sticks laying around. Annoying right?
The tactic here is to find we’re the fish hangs out fast and efficiently. That means switching places a lot if there is no bite. You should also reeling your line in fast. Fishing with a boat makes this process much easier. You should have heavy weights if you are fishing with soft bait, 10-15 grams. At these spicy times the perch tends to chase your lures. The best lures for this time are crankbaits and heavy weighted soft baits. My favorite among the soft baits is the basic grub bait, which I have caught several big perch with. All those baits will drive the perch to a frenzy when the sun is blazing. You will also be rewarded strongly by waking up early in the morning at about 6 am, because that is when the fish is most active. 6 am and around 6 pm is when the fish are most active. So the best scenario is to fish early in the morning for a couple of hours then go do something else, and come back and fish in the afternoon.
In colder times the fishing is much slower, but for some reason usually more rewarding, as the perch tends to be bigger on average. When the weather is cold, all fish tend to swim further down the lake to the bottom. This is when you need to have a boat or you won't really have a chance of finding the fish, unless it is a very slim lake. The fish usually rest in burrows at the bottom and your job will be to find these burrows. It is very easy if you have a sonar, otherwise quite difficult. If you don't have one try sweeping the bottom of the lake with a fast sinking soft bait and try to discover burrows and deep ends. Once you have an idea of these burrows, sink your lure to the bottom and reel very slowly along it. There should be a pause when it drops and you stop reeling for about 3-7 seconds, to then pick up and reel again. The baits to use at these times are soft baits. The best ones are shad and grubs in my opinion, and you want to aim for more colorful lures such as red, pink or blue and white.
Now you know the basics of catching a big perch. With these methods you will be all set to catch a big perch. You will probably get by-catche’s of pike and bass as well, just because they will bite anything they can get their teeths on. You are not going to catch any fish here so stop reading fishing tips on the internet and go out and fish!
